Photos de France

Bonjour from Boulder!  Sophie, our France leader extraordinaire, has spent the last few years leading Global Works students in a photo project every summer.  As part of their community service, the photo project aims to share with the community how they have experienced their stay in Carcassonne. During the homestay in Carcassonne, each student picks one thing which, in their view, embodies the most  of France, the French people or French culture. They took a picture of it and wrote a small text in both English and French which clearly express what makes the subject of the photograph so special, and why they selected it in particular.  It is a wonderful way to remember their time in France through small, meaningful snapshots.  Our friend Marie at the Association des Sites du Pays Cathare in Carcassonne has posted them on the blog associated with the association’s website.  Check them out!

C’est très belle ici!

A Little Bit Can Go a Long Way

Studying and alleviating world hunger?  The two don’t often go hand in hand, but if you are looking to brush up on your Spanish before (or after!) your Global Works trip, study for your geography test, or prepare for the SATs, check out FreeRice.  It’s a website that asks you multiple choice questions on a subject of your choosing and donates 10 grains of rice for every correct answer.  Although 10 grains of rice may seem like a small amount, it is important to remember that while you are playing, so are thousands of other people at the same time. It is everyone together that makes the difference.  Look at it this way: say you are earning about 100 grains of rice per minute.  In 10 minutes, you will have donated 1,000 grains  In 20, 2000!  Not too many other websites help you do good while you are wasting time!  Every little thing you do really adds up.  Since it began in October 2007, FreeRice has generated enough rice to feed millions of people; 76,499,979,710 grains to be exact.  After you play, you can feel good knowing that somewhere in the world, a person is eating rice that you helped provide.

Taking a school project beyond the classroom

Wendy Ellis, the 2009 Global Works Costa Rica S3 leader, extended a Glacier Creek Middle School student project  into the communities she visited while on her Global Works trip.  Here is a synopsis of their work and how it was spread to communities all over the world!

8th graders from Glacier Creek Middle School in Middleton, WI did a cross-curricular unit that involved students from Spanish, Art, and Family and Consumer Education courses. Students studied aspects of Hispanic cultures, examined fair trade practices, and wrote and illustrated bilingual books which they “published” using an online photo printing website.  (more…)
