Global Works Home Office Welcomes Hillary!

Hillary is the newest member of the Home Office. This summer, she is helping with trip preparations for all of the Summer Service Adventure trips and learning about office operations while partaking in a 8 week internship.  Read a bit about Hillary below:

As a Colorado native, Hillary has yet to get away from the beautiful Rocky Mountains that she calls home.  Growing up in Loveland, Colorado, she has been able to enjoy the great hiking trails and beautiful scenery that is right in her back yard.  Hillary developed her love of traveling and service work at age 12 when she started traveling with her youth group program and went on service trips once a year.  She was lucky enough to continue this tradition with Global Works when she went to Peru with them in May 2011. Currently, she is studying at the University of Colorado in Boulder and hopes to graduate with degrees in anthropology and international affairs.  Working in the office for Global Works has been a great opportunity for Hillary and she hopes to continue doing service work and traveling in her future.

Synergy School – Puerto Rico Update

The Synergy School is enjoying their adventures in Puerto Rico. Check out their latest update:

Synergy School Photo: Puerto Rico

Thursday night, March 10Synergy students and teachers finally reached their destination after a long day of travel and settled in for a good night of sleep. We had a late night pizza dinner and went to bed happy.

Friday March 11- Today was a wonderful welcome for the Synergy School as they were guided through Old San Juan by our great friend Alvin. He explained a bit of the history of the city as we made our way through the old cobble stone streets and visited places like the old cathedral and the fort El Morro. The views from the fort of the old city were amazing and the waves were crashing along the coast. We had a traditional lunch with such things as mofongo, tostones, rice and beans and amarillow at El Jibarito and finished up our day with a little shopping and a rest in the Plaza Colon. After saying good bye to Alvin we climbed back in our vans and made our way south and through the mountains to our new home in Patillas. Ready for bed we settled in nicely to the sounds of coqui frogs and owls. (more…)

Alexander Dawson School – Costa Rica Update

photo: group getting ready to start their Costa Rica trip

The Alexander Dawson group arrived in Costa Rica on March 11th, here is the latest update from their trip!

Friday, March 11, 2011
The airplane may be boring for some people, but all of us had a really awesome time. First we took a two(ish) hour flight to phoenix where wen hung out near our gate drinking Starbucks, eating lunch, and playing various card games (some of which we  were able to win gum provided by Owen).  It was at least four hours before we boarded the next plane (flight was delayed). This plane ride went from Phoenix straight to Costa Rica and was at least seven hours. When we landed, we went through immigration and customs and were later met by Lola, our guide. She was energetic and friendly.

When we got to the hotel it was later than planned so we had to be *extra* quiet. We had a dinner consisting of sandwiches, then we had an orientation meeting. Unfortunately, we were all a bit tired from our travels, and headed back to our rooms to relax, which mainly consisted of people getting ready for the next morning – our big adventures river rafting! We all went to sleep, ready to get up at a way-too-early time for the next day. (more…)
