Support Literacy Initiatives in Guatemala

It’s 100 Book Day season once again! 100 Book Day started in 2009 when Katie (former Global Works Leader and Office Homie) and her son Finn started talking about what it would be like to read one hundred books in one day! What transpired was an idea for them to do just that, and in doing so, to raise money and awareness for Reading Village.  Reading Village is a non-profit organization that focuses on children in Guatemala while working collaboratively with residents of impoverished villages to create programs that develop a culture of reading. 100 Book Day – Reading for a Cause – 2010

Katie and Finn are gearing up for the 2010 100 Book Day! Last year this reading pair were keeping the library busy with their book marathon – 100 Book Day – Reading for a Cause – 2009

100 Book day started with Katie, a supporter of Reading Village, and her four-year-old son who read 100 books and raised $1,000 for Reading Village! They had a great time and are participating again this year on November 27th.

Photos de France

Bonjour from Boulder!  Sophie, our France leader extraordinaire, has spent the last few years leading Global Works students in a photo project every summer.  As part of their community service, the photo project aims to share with the community how they have experienced their stay in Carcassonne. During the homestay in Carcassonne, each student picks one thing which, in their view, embodies the most  of France, the French people or French culture. They took a picture of it and wrote a small text in both English and French which clearly express what makes the subject of the photograph so special, and why they selected it in particular.  It is a wonderful way to remember their time in France through small, meaningful snapshots.  Our friend Marie at the Association des Sites du Pays Cathare in Carcassonne has posted them on the blog associated with the association’s website.  Check them out!

C’est très belle ici!

Fireworks at the Cité: 14th July

Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789. Bastille Day in Carcassonne is celebrated like no other in France – they quite literally fire up the medieval Cité with the most incredible fireworks display! The legendary display – in part a commemoration of the original burning of the Cité in 1898- is one of the largest in Europe! Global Works France participants are fortunate to be living with homestay families in Carcassonne this week! Along with their families, they are looking forward to  packing a picnic, setting up on the banks of the River Aude and watching the show!
