Global Works Alum David Narrow Reflects on his Experience 6 Years Later

In 2006 I led my very first trip to Costa Rica with Global Works. It was 4 weeks of service, outdoor adventure, language immersion and Pico de Gallo. We couldn’t have had a better group of students. I recently caught up with David Narrow, now a graduate student at Johns Hopkins.  Here’s what he has to say, 6 years later, about how those 4 weeks have informed and affected his path.

At the age of 16, most middle-class American kids are completely immersed in anything from a video game, to socializing and partying, to college visiting and studying for the SATs. Due to all the pressures from parents, peers and the media, most kids get overwhelmed and frustrated when things don’t go their way. This frustration often causes a lot of stress and is not a healthy way for a 16 year old to be living. While most people on my Global Works trip to Costa Rica had good educations and came from well-off families, most of us had not been truly exposed to the way of life of so many all around the world. Global Works put life and the real world in perspective for all of us. The program taught us to put our problems in perspective and realize how big of an impact each of us can have on the world. Dream Town – Valley of Chota, Ecuador

Global Works just learned of this film-in-the-making today called “Dream Town” from our Peru and Ecuador leader, Jordan Bailey.  This documentary tells the story of the Valley of Chota in Ecuador. This is the community where  Jordan spent three years as a Peace Corps Volunteer, and the people there are very near and dear to him (in fact, he just visited them this past week!).

An amazing aspect of this Afro-Ecuadorian community is that they are incredible soccer players – 50% of the Ecuadorian national team actually hails from this small, poor, rural community. The film-makers are in the process of raising awareness and funds to complete the editing process of the film. Check it out on Kickstarter. (more…)

Q: What year did Global Works set out on their first adventure, and what was the purpose of this trip?
A: Global Works was founded in 1989 by Pam and James “Biff” Houldin. Puerto Rico was the destination for the first service program. In an unfortunate coincidence, Hurricane Hugo devastated much of Puerto Rico that September. Amidst the devastation, Biff realized that meaningful service and cultural exchange might be achieved through the reconstruction of homes after this terrible storm. In the summer of 1990, 25 students and 5 staff embarked for Puerto Rico!

College Students: Alternative Winter Break – Guatemala

Global Works Custom Group Travel has teamed up with Limitless Horizons Ixil (LHI) and Brown University for a service-based travel program in the community of Chajul, Guatemala. For the past three years students have been been working alongside community members on a variety of projects including: installing cement floors in an elementary school, preparing Chajul’s first public library, planting vegetable gardens and facilitating sports events.  They also spend time learning about the Mayan culture, hiking to beautiful waterfalls in the area, learning the art of tortilla making and spending time with families in the community. For the first time, we are opening this program up to all college students! We invite students from all Universities and Colleges to join other thoughtful travelers from around the world for service, learning and adventure. When? January 10 – 21, 2011.
