With a quick stop in San Juan, Puerto Rico with Global Works leader Tyrone, The Spence School arrived in Martinique on Sunday. After a well deserved night’s sleep, the group woke around 9 a.m. on Monday to typical breakfast, drinking chocolat chaud from a bowl and eating baguette-beurre-confiture. With bellies full, the group went for a walk in town to familiarize themselves with the layout of the town. The colorful houses and shops in these narrow streets were charming and the view from the pier was simply gorgeous! After a walk down town, the group ended at the beach where the water was perfect and the sun hid just behind the clouds making for a great temperature!

After a flavorful lunch, the afternoon was spent painting Martinique’s flowers at the local artist Marigé’s studio. When they were finished putting the last creative touches on their paintings at Marigé’s, the group went back to the residence to rest before dinner.

For dinner they ate boudin créol as an appetizer, flounder with christophine (a sort of squash) and banana gratin as the entrée, and glace à l’eau (water-based ice cream) for desert. Jacqueline and Léon (the restaurant owners/cooks/servers) were very welcoming and the food was extremely delicious.
“The first few days in Martinique have been filled with sunshine and laughter – We are looking forward to the week ahead!” Sophie K.
