Update # 2 from Guatemala – Brown University
We arrived in Panajachel today after a long, windy microbus journey from Chajul. Everyone was happy to get out of the van and into the sunny weather and fresh air on the lake. After lunch and a brief walk we took the boat to our hotel, which thoroughly impressed everyone. After eating so much corn throughout the trip, a delicious dinner that contained no traces of corn was well received by everyone as well!
The last few days in Chajul have been an incredible experience. We made progress on our service projects which included installing organic gardens for 10 families, painting the Limitless Horizons Ixil (LHI) community center and putting together school supply kits for LHI students. The Brown University group got along extremely well with the LHI students and enjoyed an afternoon of board games, sports, and a beautiful hike to a waterfall where we all swam and picnicked. Our farewell ceremony included dancing, singing and a special presentation of gifts of Chajul’s traditional head wear to all the group members. (more…)

Update from Guatemala – Brown University
Everything is going great here in Guatemala and the group is outstanding!! They are fun, flexible, hard-working, intelligent, funny, and mature in a totally immature way! The weather has been a little rainy with gray skies these past few days – but everybody is enjoying the trip, and looking forward to blue skies and sunshine.
Our travel days were smooth! Yesterday we did a cultural lesson with Limitless Horizons Ixil, tortilla making with families, orientation to the program and an afternoon of games with 30 LHI students (Uno, dominos, pictionary, scrabble, puzzles, Chinese checkers and most popular of all Bingo!) Today we started service work. We painted our community center and labeled books in our student library. (more…)

Puerto Rico – Day Two Update!
Notes from Erik and Tyrone – on the road, day two!

On day two of the scouting trip we awoke to the sounds of the ocean at our group hotel in Luquillo. Luquillo, located on the northeast tip of the island, and touted as the “Puerto Rican Riviera,” is our base for adventure activities. We toured Luquillo “inspecting” local beaches and meeting with adventure operators our groups work with in town.
In the afternoon we took a scenic drive along the east coast to the town of Patillas located on the south east section of the island. Here we met with the owner of a fantastic new group lodging facility and toured the facilities. From the eco-lodge we ventured out to meet with families in the area with whom we’ve worked in the past and will continue to organize home construction projects in the future. Among this friendly community is the wonderful family of Thomas and Grace, pictured to the left. Our future San Francisco Day School and Synergy School groups will continue to assist them with finishing their house before Grace gives birth to a new child in May!

Puerto Rico Update!
Global Works Director Erik Werner is in Puerto Rico touring our Global Works operations with Country Director Tyrone Moore. Today they visited families in the community of Villa del Rio where Global Works groups have assisted in the construction of many houses.
Later in the day they visited Toro Verde Adventure Park where Global Works students will have the opportunity to experience one of the largest and professionally run zip line operations in the world. Among the ten zip lines strung across the scenic valley is a 4,750ft ride called “The Beast.”
Enjoy these photos, and more updates to come!
