Q: What year did Global Works set out on their first adventure, and what was the purpose of this trip?
A: Global Works was founded in 1989 by Pam and James “Biff” Houldin. Puerto Rico was the destination for the first service program. In an unfortunate coincidence, Hurricane Hugo devastated much of Puerto Rico that September. Amidst the devastation, Biff realized that meaningful service and cultural exchange might be achieved through the reconstruction of homes after this terrible storm. In the summer of 1990, 25 students and 5 staff embarked for Puerto Rico!

Trivia: 2011 Catalog Quiz

Over the past few weeks the home office has hand delivered over 500 catalogs to high school students all over the east coast! From Millburn High School in New Jersey, to Great Neck High School, Roslyn High School,  Scarsdale  and Spence School in New York – we have provided hundreds of our catalogs to students, teachers and families. Have you had a chance to look through the 2011 program offerings yet?  If not, take a look and then jump into today’s trivia game!  This post is going to test your knowledge of the Global Works 2011 Catalog and program offerings!

Social Network for the Social Sector

If you haven’t had a chance to check out one of the newest social network for the social sector on the web, I’d recommend taking a few minutes to explore JUMO.  Jumo.com is a site that has created a platform to connect individuals and organizations working to change the world. Through this web-based tool individuals and groups can find issues and projects that are meaningful to them, follow the latest news and updates surrounding these projects, and support their work through time, funding and skills.

For those that have some time to navigate through the Jumo sight, I think it is a really neat way to better understand the myriad amount of social issues and approaches to solutions from around the world. (more…)

Updates from the Home Office

Polly, Ellie and Hanna getting ready for their flight to Costa Rica!We hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving! Here at the home office we have had a busy start to the Holiday Season starting off with many phone calls and emails about our 2011 Catalog and inquiries about our new program offerings in Costa Rica, Panama, Spain, Ecuador and Fiji!!! In other news, Global Works Homies Becca and Craig have been visiting with families, schools and at fairs on the East Coast in New York and New Jersey.  Peru & Ecuador leader Jordan Bailey met up with the team in New York.  The Moriarty Family (Fritz and Polly with their kids Ellie and Hanna) are enjoying some time in Costa Rica (photo) visiting our Global Works hot spots and planning more fun adventures for the upcoming trips. Sarah just returned from a few days in Ohio with her family (and not to mention a great Turkey Trot Race in her hometown).  Katelyn spent time in Arizona for the holiday, and director Erik Werner enjoyed some time on the slopes of Colorado with his children at Winter Park.
