CanopyCo and Global Works
CanopyCo is a project based in Ecuador, dedicated to recreating native ecosystems in Ecuador’s rural areas, with the finality of helping reduce the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere through the planting of native tree species.
Our work is funded through voluntary carbon offset payments provided by tourism to and from Ecuador. The funds are used to buy native trees from community tree nurseries, pay local workers for reforestation, and to provide families with the opportunity of reforesting swathes of land that were once beautiful forests. This activity is helping regenerate the typical flora and fauna of the area, helping to replenish drying up water sheds as well as absorbing significant quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
For the last two years, CanopyCo has been extremely fortunate to have the support of the Global Works team, who has supported the project, precipitating its advancement. (more…)

Concalma – San Juan, Puerto Rico
Con calma. A popular phrase in Spanish and also the brand name/ philosophy behind a bag company located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Con calma implies maintaining tranquility and it is something the founder and designer of this company used as inspiration when creating this line of bags. “Concalma products serve as tools to facilitate our physical flow from one place to another treading lightly on our planet”. The bags are designed to be adaptable, reusable and responsible. Local seamstresses are used to produce the bags. Using a Concalma bag in place of plastic bags is highly encouraged. When you purchase a Concalma bag for a gift, it is wrapped in brightly colored clippings from old magazines. If you find that your Concalma bag no longer suits your needs, bring it back to the store to exchange for another “gently used” bag or get a discount on a brand new one. (more…)

Home Sweet Home
Katelyn from the home office just got back from her trip in Spain! While she claims she’s happy to be back, we bet she didn’t miss the 9-5 schedule too much:
Dorothy said it first and she said it best: “there’s no place like home.” That sometimes gets hard to believe working here in the office, where we devote all our time and energy to creating amazing trips that travel to all corners of the globe. By the time summer rolls around, all I want to do is get out of the office and start traveling. And I am lucky enough to be able to do that, having led in Argentina, Costa Rica, and Spain in my two years with Global Works. The summers are fun, action packed, meaningful… and exhausting. Being “on” 24/7 for a month takes its toll and all of a sudden all you want is your own bed, your normal schedule, and enough free time to think for yourself. This year was especially hard–I had a new dog to get back to at home! By the time the trip ended (which was fantastic, in case you were wondering), I wanted so badly to just hop on the flight back with the students and get home! Alas, I still had another two weeks to spend in Spain. Poor me. I filled my time with scouting, light traveling, and relaxing. But I no longer had students to distract me from the thought of home and now I really wanted to be back in Colorado. By the time I got home I was almost as excited to be there as I had been when I had landed in Spain six weeks prior. It seems there is a mutually beneficial relationship happening there; being stuck at home makes you appreciate travel and traveling makes you appreciate home. I love travel if for nothing more than that. No matter where I am I have learned to appreciate what I have both at home and abroad.
