St. Croix, Colorado, Canada and Hawaii…

In addition to managing Global Works Summer Service Adventures,  Director Erik Werner is racing his way through the summer by participating in various international and local triathlon events.  In May, Erik traveled to St. Croix, Virgin Islands to participate in the 70.3 Half Ironman (1.2 swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run) where he finished 2nd in his age group and 23rd overall and earned a spot to compete in the Hawaii Ironman World Championships in October.  In the month of July he competed in a couple local Olympic distance events (1500 m swim, 40k bike, 10k run), The Lake to Lake Triathlon and the Boulder Peak Triathlon, finishing both 1st in his age group and 1st “master” (over the age of 40).  In late August he plans to compete at Ironman Canada (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.1 mile run) in Penticton Canada as a “warm up” race for the Hawaii Ironman in October.  Best wishes to Erik in Hawaii and may you continue to Travel, Swim, Bike, and Run with Purpose! Veteran GW Staffers Bring Their Global Work Closer to Home

Veteran leaders Kelly Wright and Wendy Ellis used the skills and experience they’ve gained as Global Works staff to create meaningful summer opportunities for bilingual and English language learner (ELL) students in their home state of Wisconsin this summer.  Wright and Ellis, who both currently live and teach in the Madison area, received an Immigrant Children and Youth grant to fund a three week summer enrichment program for middle school students. The program featured gang-resistance training and education, volunteer work in a school garden, visits to local colleges and universities, career exploration activities, a wellness day, and field trips to local businesses, a farmer’s market, and the state capitol.  A total of twenty five students, originating from all parts of the globe including India, Bolivia, Pakistan, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and China, participated in the program. Fireworks at the Cité: 14th July

Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789. Bastille Day in Carcassonne is celebrated like no other in France – they quite literally fire up the medieval Cité with the most incredible fireworks display! The legendary display – in part a commemoration of the original burning of the Cité in 1898- is one of the largest in Europe! Global Works France participants are fortunate to be living with homestay families in Carcassonne this week! Along with their families, they are looking forward to  packing a picnic, setting up on the banks of the River Aude and watching the show!
