Taking a school project beyond the classroom

Wendy Ellis, the 2009 Global Works Costa Rica S3 leader, extended a Glacier Creek Middle School student project  into the communities she visited while on her Global Works trip.  Here is a synopsis of their work and how it was spread to communities all over the world!

8th graders from Glacier Creek Middle School in Middleton, WI did a cross-curricular unit that involved students from Spanish, Art, and Family and Consumer Education courses. Students studied aspects of Hispanic cultures, examined fair trade practices, and wrote and illustrated bilingual books which they “published” using an online photo printing website.  (more…)

One Winter, Five Dreams: Skeleton Racing

Katherine Eustace, a close friend and a in-country support person to the Global Works New Zealand / Fiji Program, has working hard towards achieving her goal to be a qualifier in Skeleton Race for the Winter Olympics. “It’s a high speed sport that requires precision steering on ice at high speeds, its fast and exciting, but requires focus and determination to make it at the highest level” says Katherine. Spain: Sins of the Loose Buttons Performs Live

It’s safe to say that most students on a Global Works trip don’t travel to another country with the intention of getting their band hired to play at the local music hall, but that’s just what happened to two students in Spain during the summer of 2009.  What started as a casual conversation about music with their host-brother led to a booking at a venue called SOUL where they played an entire set to a standing room only crowd.

Zack Kantor and Eric Nizguretsky, who participated in the Spain 2009 Global Works trip, are two members of a band called Sins of the Loose Buttons (www.sotlb.com) back in the States.  They brought their guitars across the Atlantic and played almost nightly for everyone in the group.  (more…)
